In the beginning, according to Huron Indian legend, the earth was covered with water. People lived in Sky Land, home of the great Sky Tree. The Sky Tree was the sustenance of life for all its people, providing them with all the food and nutrients they required. When the old chief became sick, his wife tried to cut the Sky Tree to get him the fruit he dreamed would cure him. When the tree split in two, half fell to the earth – where it took root in the soil provided by the turtle from the ocean floor – bringing with it new life.
